Spirituality
The soul is always wiser than the mind, even though we are dependent on the mind to read the soul for us. - John O’Donohue
Spirituality On Your Own Terms
When we say the word spiritual, for a lot of people that can be a loaded word. There is often a pre-conceived notion that it means something very specific. In my view, it can mean a lot of different things for different people, and I work with the meaning you make of it.
Your connection with spirituality may have developed by accident, it may have been something you noticed when you were quite young, it may have arisen through a dark time in your life or it may have emerged through a psychedelic experience. Sometimes when we hit a certain low, and are forced to surrender, we come into contact with something greater than ourselves, whatever that means to you.
How Can Counselling Support Spiritual Exploration?
You may wish to connect with your spirituality through the following, although it is not an exhaustive list:
integrating a spiritual experience (spontaneous, from a meditation retreat, psychedelic experience, or otherwise)
your relationships with other humans, pets, nature and the collective
working through a spiritual crisis or awakening
questioning where you find meaning and working on discovering what feels true to you
If you think you are experiencing a spiritual crisis, you may feel like your life has completely inverted, that you thought you had everything figured out, but now it’s all drowning in a sea of confusion. You might be questioning everything or noticing that your spiritual self is moving you towards a life that looks very different from how you are currently living.
Wherever you are at in your journey, I work to support people to align more deeply with their spirituality, and relate to it as a guide and resource. Your relationship with your spirituality may have important things to say about who you were, are and ought to be but our societal values may not have not created any space for those parts of you to exist. I work with people to uncover those parts that are asking to be heard, so they can be integrated into new ways of seeing and being. You may learn how to access an intuition or deeper knowing, or develop a stronger relationship with it, making decisions easier, and direction clearer.
